Ladies in Retirement

“The Great Broadway Melodrama Comes to Flaming Life on the Screen!”

Ellen Creed (Ida Lupino) keeps house for Leonora Fiske, a retired actress in the English countryside, and no one can say why her two eccentric sisters have to be brought under the same roof. Charles Vidor lets Emily (Elsa Lanchester) and Louisa Creed (Edith Barrett) settle into the house, while tempers rise and visitors begin to call. Ellen has taken a great deal on herself to keep the sisters there, and one slip means losing them and the roof.
