In 1933, Dan (James Cagney) is working the nightlife underworld, a small-time crook with a gang behind him. Then he lands in Hollywood and becomes a movie star, and the people he ran with, among them Duke (Leslie Fenton), don't intend to let him go. Roy Del Ruth sets a man's new fame against his old loyalties, and the question is which one gets to claim him.
