Lady of the Camelias
Alphonsine Plessis (Isabelle Huppert) leaves the provinces for Paris with one aim: to get herself into the rich bourgeoisie, using her beauty and her charm to do it. The film follows the real woman who became a famous courtesan and inspired the Dumas novel, with Gian Maria Volonté and Bruno Ganz among the men around her. Mauro Bolognini films her climb in the same restrained, measured manner throughout.
