Lady Windermere's Fan

Lady Windermere (May McAvoy) wants to believe her husband still loves her, but the bank statements show payments to Mrs. Erlynne (Irene Rich), a woman the whole of society whispers about. Lubitsch adapts Oscar Wilde's 1892 play without a word of spoken dialogue, so the gossip and the drawing-room politeness play out in glances and gestures. Behind it sits a plain idea: a good name and a bad reputation can rest on the same misunderstanding.
