Land and Freedom

David Carr (Ian Hart), an unemployed Liverpool communist, leaves for Spain in the summer of 1936 because he wants to fight fascism himself rather than read about it. He joins the POUM militia, a mixed band of foreign volunteers and Spanish fighters that includes Blanca (Rosana Pastor) and Bernard (Frédéric Pierrot). Ken Loach and writer Jim Allen make the war a question of what the fighting is for: the land, the revolution, or the side that wins.
