The Carraclough family in Yorkshire has run out of money, so Sam (Donald Crisp) sells their collie, Lassie, to the wealthy Duke of Rudling (Nigel Bruce). Joe (Roddy McDowall) is a boy who loves the dog, and Lassie will not stay put in a kennel that isn't his. Fred M. Wilcox sends her off alone across the miles toward home, where every night out is a risk she can't see coming.
