Late Autumn
In 1960 Japan, Akiko Miwa (Setsuko Hara) is a widow living with her grown daughter Ayako (Yōko Tsukasa), and three men who knew her late husband have started pressing for a marriage in the family. Yasujirō Ozu keeps the pressure polite, spoken over tea and across low tables, and the mother and daughter each feel it turn toward them. Hara sits very still in the house they share, and the quiet around her says more than the men do.
