Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) is a Philadelphia prosecutor who guards his conviction rate closely, so when the evidence in a home-invasion murder runs thin, he cuts a plea deal that frees one of the killers. Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler), who watched his wife and daughter die, decides the deal was never justice and goes after the man who signed it. F. Gary Gray sets the two against each other, one man with a rulebook and one who has stopped believing in it.
