Corey (Alain Delon) walks out of prison with one plan, which is never to go back. A chance meeting with Vogel (Gian Maria Volonté), a murderer on the run, draws him into a jewel heist alongside Jansen (Yves Montand), a former policeman and a drunk. Jean-Pierre Melville has Commissioner Mattei (Bourvil) working the case in the background, the man who lost Vogel, still searching for him.
