“Eastside High was out of control...until Joe Clark took it back.”

Eastside High in Paterson, New Jersey is a building that has stopped functioning, with gang colors in the halls and graffiti on every wall. Joe Clark (Morgan Freeman) takes over as principal and starts expelling suspected drug dealers and padlocking the doors, demanding results from everyone who works or studies there. John G. Avildsen keeps the pressure on one date, because if scores on the state skills test don't improve, New Jersey takes the school away.
