Lang Ping (Gong Li) wants to bring the Chinese women's volleyball team back to the Olympic final after twelve years away. The film follows the team across more than three decades, from the first generation of players to a new one, with Chen Zhonghe (Huang Bo) among those who shape the squad. Peter Chan builds it around Lang Ping, who spends those years carrying a country's hopes on a few women and a net.
