Nobody in the Siberian village can say why the Leningrad Cowboys play the way they do, only that they leave for America with their manager Vladimir (Matti Pellonpää) and their instruments. Aki Kaurismäki sends them across the country toward a wedding in Mexico, with the village idiot Igor (Kari Väänänen) following behind, hoping to join the band. It sets a Siberian polka band against American roads and music, and the two sides keep on meeting.
