Les Misérables

(1935)Directed by Richard Boleslawski108 minDrama, History, Romance
“The immortal classic that shook a nation… is now a glorious picture !”

Jean Valjean (Fredric March) is a man who stole bread, served his time in prison, and now only wants to live quietly under a different name. Inspector Javert (Charles Laughton) will not let the old record go, and he follows Valjean from town to town across 19th-century France, into the student uprisings in Paris. Richard Boleslawski adapts Hugo's 1862 novel with a few changes, so the book's long pursuit runs tighter.
