Les Misérables

(1958)Directed by Jean-Paul Le Chanois210 minDrama

Jean Valjean (Jean Gabin) walks out of prison in 19th century France after years behind bars for stealing bread, and the inspector Javert (Bernard Blier) is already tracking him. The chase pulls in the child Cosette (Béatrice Altariba), the schemer Thénardier (Bourvil), and the student Marius (Giani Esposito) as Paris moves toward revolt. Jean-Paul Le Chanois adapts Victor Hugo's 1862 novel with Gabin's heavy, weathered face at the center of nearly every scene.
