Why does a man's name keep changing across nineteenth-century France, and why does one policeman never lose the scent? Jean Valjean (Lino Ventura) served his sentence for stealing bread, and now Inspector Javert (Michel Bouquet) hunts him from town to town. Robert Hossein adapts Hugo's novel as a long chase, and the two men are bound to each other by it.
