Jean-Marc Clement (Yves Montand), a billionaire, hears that an off-Broadway revue is about to make fun of him, and he wants to see it for himself. He ends up passing himself off as an actor hired to play Jean-Marc Clement, which puts him in the same rehearsal room as the show's star, Amanda Dell (Marilyn Monroe). George Cukor films a man who can't tell her who he is and a woman who is falling for the wrong version of him.
