Letter from an Unknown Woman

(1948)Directed by Max Ophüls87 minDrama, Romance
“This is the love every woman lives for…the love every man would die for!”

Lisa Berndle (Joan Fontaine) has loved one man since girlhood, and he does not know her name. He is Stefan Brand (Louis Jourdan), a pianist who is about to leave Vienna to avoid a duel when her letter reaches him. Max Ophüls lets her story unfold as he reads, and the two of them move closer to each other in the telling than they ever did in life.
