A cavalry lieutenant in Vienna at the start of the twentieth century is trying to end his affair with a baroness, and someone has already carried word of it to her husband. Then Fritz Lobheimer meets Christine Weyring (Magda Schneider), the daughter of an opera violinist, and what he meant as a light attachment becomes a feeling he cannot step back from. Max Ophüls sets her plain feeling against a society that treats love as a pastime.
