Rayford Gibson (Eddie Murphy) and Claude Banks (Martin Lawrence) are two men in 1930s Mississippi who are handed life sentences for a crime neither of them committed. Ted Demme follows them into the prison, where a wisecracking hustler and a timid bank clerk have no choice but to share a cell. They start as strangers who barely tolerate each other, and the years behind bars bind them tighter.
