In 2001, in a California coastal town, George Monroe (Kevin Kline) is told he has terminal cancer and takes custody of his teenage son Sam (Hayden Christensen). Sam spends his days getting high and avoiding his father, who has years of distance to make up with him and with his ex-wife Robin (Kristin Scott Thomas). Irwin Winkler directs the family's slow, awkward attempt at repair with a steady, unhurried patience.
