In the Maravillas neighborhood of Madrid, Eloísa (Lina Canalejas) keeps her household running while her husband, a policeman, turns violent at home. Fernando Fernán Gómez adapts Juan Antonio de Zunzunegui's 1960 novel, following a family held together by her labor: a son who studies and prays to atone for the rest of them, and two daughters who want money and hate each other. Eloísa moves between them, the one person in the house still doing the work.
