“When your family is closing you in, music may be the only way out.”

Joe Rasnick (Michael J. Fox) plays guitar in a Cleveland bar band, The Barbusters, alongside his older sister Patti (Joan Jett), who writes the songs and sings them. Their mother Janette (Gena Rowlands) is not impressed, and Paul Schrader keeps the three of them sparring at the kitchen table as often as on stage. Joe and Patti go on fighting over the band and over her, while the hardest argument is between daughter and mother.
