Kiyoko (Hideko Takamine) has done what few in her family manage and gotten clear of them, turning down the marriage they arranged with a man she cannot stand. Mikio Naruse, adapting Fumiko Hayashi's 1936 novel, keeps her among a household of siblings whose different fathers and constant quarrels leave no one settled. The ties that hold Kiyoko to her family are not the ones she wants, and she cannot simply cut them.
