Lili Marleen

(1981)Directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder120 minDrama, War, Romance

Willie (Hanna Schygulla) is a German singer working the clubs of Switzerland, and what she wants is Robert (Giancarlo Giannini), a Jewish composer whose family smuggles people out of reach of the Nazis. Rainer Werner Fassbinder sets their affair against the Third Reich, and Robert's family distrusts her as "Lili Marleen" makes her a star. She keeps singing, and the song carries her further into the regime's favor than she means to go.
