Homer Smith (Sidney Poitier), an out-of-work handyman driving west, pulls into a remote Arizona farm when his car overheats and he needs water. The farm belongs to a small group of East German nuns, and Mother Maria (Lilia Skala) takes one look at him and decides God has delivered a builder for the chapel she wants. Ralph Nelson leaves Homer standing in the desert, his car idling behind him, a stranger to these women and already expected.
