“Before Eve there was Evil… and her name was Lilith!”

Vincent Bruce (Warren Beatty), a war veteran, takes a job as an occupational therapist at Poplar Lodge, a private psychiatric facility for wealthy patients. There he meets Lilith Arthur (Jean Seberg), a young woman with schizophrenia whose fragile beauty draws in everyone around her. Robert Rossen, in his last film, adapts J. R. Salamanca's 1961 novel and treats the whole story as a slow loosening of hold.
