Junn (Cheng Pei-pei) is an elderly Chinese-Cambodian woman living alone in a care home in London, still waiting for her son Kai (Andrew Leung) to visit. Richard (Ben Whishaw), the lover Kai never told her about, keeps turning up, and they have no language in common, so a translator, Vann (Naomi Yang), has to sit between them. Hong Khaou keeps the camera still and lets the long silences carry the grief.
