“The only thing more dangerous than death...is survival.”

Joe Gastineau (David Strathairn) lives on odd jobs in an Alaskan fishing town, long past hoping for anything more since a boat accident years ago. Then Donna De Angelo (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), a travelling club singer, arrives with her troubled teenage daughter Noelle, and both of them take to him. John Sayles follows the three onto a pleasure cruise up the coast, where a trip meant as a break from their lives may cost them those lives.
