Abraham Lincoln (Daniel Day-Lewis) spends the last months of his presidency trying to end the war and abolish slavery before the country can settle back into its old terms. His wife Mary Todd Lincoln (Sally Field) and his Secretary of State William Seward (David Strathairn) are close at hand, and the votes he needs are not. Spielberg stages most of it in dim offices and crowded chambers, and Tony Kushner's screenplay lets the talk carry the story.
