“Happiness is a business”

Alice (Emily Beecham) is a plant breeder and a single mother who puts her work ahead of her teenage son, Joe (Kit Connor). Her newest creation is a flower engineered to make whoever tends it happy, and she brings one home and names it after him. Jessica Hausner's film sets that promise of contentment against the question of who chooses it for us.
