Little Miss Marker

(1980)Directed by Walter Bernstein103 min · PGComedy, Romance
“A wildly romantic comedy about a cookie, a bookie, and the kid they bet their hearts on.”

Sorrowful Jones (Walter Matthau) is a cheap, sour-faced bookie in 1930s New York who trusts no one and extends no credit. Then a gambler leaves his small daughter with him as collateral on a bet, and Amanda (Julie Andrews), who moves in the same betting circles, starts to matter to him. Walter Bernstein's remake of the Damon Runyon story keeps coming back to how little it takes to thaw a man who has spent years in the business of never giving anything away.
