“A family on the verge of a breakdown.”

The Hoovers live in Arizona, a household where nobody quite fits: Richard (Greg Kinnear) sells a self-help program, and Sheryl (Toni Collette) keeps the peace. When seven-year-old Olive (Abigail Breslin) is invited to a beauty pageant in California, the family crams into an old van to get her there. Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton press these people shoulder to shoulder, with Olive's brother Dwayne (Paul Dano), who has stopped speaking, in the back.
