“He went to bed an all-American kid and woke up the son of Russian spies.”

Jeff Grant (River Phoenix) is a teenager who wants to join the Air Force Academy, and his parents, Richard (Richard Jenkins) and Elizabeth (Caroline Kava), have given him an ordinary life to go with it. FBI agent Roy Parmenter (Sidney Poitier) comes to believe the family are Soviet sleeper agents. Richard Benjamin keeps the thriller close to Roy's side of the surveillance, where the investigation and the friendship pull against each other.
