With the Civil War just over, Jo (June Allyson) and her three sisters are growing up in the same crowded house, each pulling toward a different future. Mervyn LeRoy films their parlor plays, quarrels and winter chores in Technicolor, with Meg (Janet Leigh), Beth (Margaret O'Brien) and Amy (Elizabeth Taylor) all competing for the same small space. Jo's closest tie is to Laurie (Peter Lawford), the boy next door.
