“A BEAUTIFUL COASTLINE... A RICH OIL MAN WANTS TO DEVELOP IT. A POOR BEACH BUM WANTS TO LIVE ON IT. AN ENTIRE TOWN WANTS TO PROFIT BY IT. AND A REAL-LIVE MERMAID WANTS TO SAVE IT... ONLY ONE OF THEM WILL GET THEIR WAY.”

In 1983, a Texas oil company sends "Mac" MacIntyre (Peter Riegert) to a village on the west coast of Scotland, where it wants to buy the whole place and build a refinery. Bill Forsyth sets him among the locals, including the hotel-keeper Gordon Urquhart (Denis Lawson), with Felix Happer (Burt Lancaster) watching from the company's end. Mark Knopfler's score runs under it all, and Mac settles into the village's pace.
