Lokis: A Manuscript of Professor Wittembach

(1970)Directed by Janusz Majewski100 minFantasy, Horror, History

Professor Wittembach, a pastor and ethnographer, travels to a remote corner of 19th-century Lithuania hoping to study the pagan customs that still hold the villagers. He stays among the local gentry, including the Countess (Zofia Mrozowska) and Szemiot (Józef Duriasz), and the more he learns of the region's old beliefs, the less comfortable the house feels. Majewski shoots the whole film in a grainy, muted palette and keeps every character tightly controlled.
