Under the big top, a Circus Master (Peter Ustinov) announces Lola Montes (Martine Carol) as the main act, a woman once notorious across Europe, now put on show for the crowd. Max Ophüls lets her scandalous past surface in pieces, as she is asked to relive the affairs that made her famous. Among them is Ludwig I, King of Bavaria (Anton Walbrook), whose devotion to her cost him his crown.
