Humbert Humbert (Jeremy Irons) is a middle-aged British novelist, educated and fastidious, who looks down on the vulgarity of American life. He takes a room at the boarding house of Charlotte Haze (Melanie Griffith) and finds himself fixed on her teenage daughter, Dolores (Dominique Swain). Adrian Lyne follows his rationalizations as they harden into a habit he can no longer talk himself out of.
