“Life can never cage a man like this!”

Jack Burns (Kirk Douglas) is a cowboy who wants nothing to do with fences, paperwork or anyone telling him where he can ride. When he learns that an old friend has been sentenced to the penitentiary, he gets himself arrested on purpose so the two of them can break out together. David Miller shows Jack as a man with a horse and a plan, and Sheriff Morey Johnson (Walter Matthau) is already on his trail.
