“True love can be murder.”

Someone is answering the personal ads in the late-1940s papers, and the women who write back keep dying, close to a dozen of them. Det. Charles Hilderbrandt (James Gandolfini) and his partner Det. Reilly (Scott Caan) start tracing a pair of killers, Ray Fernandez (Jared Leto) and Martha Beck (Salma Hayek Pinault). Todd Robinson, working from the true case, gives it the grain and wet streets of a 1970s crime picture.
