In 1977 New York, Theresa (Diane Keaton) teaches deaf children by day, a dedicated schoolteacher whose short, unhappy affair with a married man sends her into the singles' bars. Richard Brooks, adapting Judith Rossner's novel, follows her as the drinking and drugs and pickups become a pattern. She keeps going back, a teacher at her desk each morning and a stranger in the bars each night.
