Bound and hooded, a man appears in the air and Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) shoots him on arrival. It is 2044, and Joe is a looper, a hired gun who kills targets the mob sends back from thirty years ahead. Rian Johnson puts Joe across from Old Joe (Bruce Willis) when the next victim arrives unmasked, and if Joe hesitates, he loses everything he has built.
