Losing Ground

Sara (Seret Scott) is a philosophy professor who keeps her feelings at arm's length, and her husband Victor (Bill Gunn) is a painter who gives his away freely, so when they leave the city for the summer, the distance between them goes with them. Why one of them seems unable to feel what the other can't stop feeling is never put plainly. Kathleen Collins, working in 1982, writes and directs with a light, talky ease that lets the heat settle over every argument.
