Russia is at war with Napoleon, and Boris Grushenko (Woody Allen), a nervous young man who would rather be anywhere else, is drafted into the army. His distant cousin Sonja (Diane Keaton) pulls him into a scheme to assassinate Napoleon, and the two of them argue philosophy at every step. Woody Allen writes and directs this satire of Russian novels, and Boris keeps worrying about death while history drags him along.
