Ruth Etting (Doris Day) is working as a dancer when Martin Snyder (James Cagney), a gangster with connections, takes an interest in her voice and starts steering her toward bigger rooms. He books the jobs and pays for the lessons, and he expects her to belong to him in return. Charles Vidor stages the songs as full performances, then cuts to the marriage waiting behind them.
