“Love him strong... Love him sweet... Love him tender!”

Confederate soldiers Vance (Richard Egan) and Clint Reno (Elvis Presley) steal a Union payroll as the Civil War ends, then ride home to the family farm. Vance has been away for years and believed dead, and in that time his brother Clint has married Cathy (Debra Paget), the woman Vance meant to marry. Robert D. Webb films the homecoming around the three of them, with Vance and Cathy unable to look at each other for long.
