Charlotte Cooper (Diane Keaton) wants one flawless Christmas Eve dinner for her whole family, and she has been planning it for weeks. Her husband Sam (John Goodman), her son Hank (Ed Helms), and her father Bucky (Alan Arkin) all arrive carrying troubles of their own, and Jessie Nelson fits four generations around a single table. The Coopers each keep their private troubles from the others, and the night pushes them to say them out loud.
