In 1963 New York, Angie Rossini (Natalie Wood) works the counter at a department store and lives under the watch of her large Italian-American family. After one brief night with Rocky Papasano (Steve McQueen), a jazz musician who hangs around the city's hiring halls, she finds she is pregnant and tracks him down. Robert Mulligan sends her looking for the one man who can help, and she has no one else to tell and little time to decide.
