Loving Couples

Agda (Harriet Andersson), Adele (Gunnel Lindblom) and Angela (Gio Petré) lie in a Stockholm hospital, each close to giving birth, as the Great War begins. While they wait, each woman goes back through her own childhood and youth, and Mai Zetterling, in her first film as a director, moves between the ward and those remembered years. What they carry into labor is the question of how a woman's past shapes the life she is about to hand on.
