“Who is the murderer?”

Hans Beckert (Peter Lorre) is a serial killer who preys on children in Berlin, and the city is coming apart over him. The police search harder every week, and the criminal underworld, losing business to the raids, starts hunting him too. Fritz Lang, making his first sound film, builds the pursuit out of rigid frames and doorways, so the whole city feels like a trap closing around one man.
